Young boys train in Vedic rituals at a monastery in Thrissur. We waited in a large hall where the bright sun was muted by louvered walls. It seemed to be an all male environment. The small boys wearing dhotis hurried in, sat down, got into position and began a sing-song chant, nodding and bowing to the words.Three of the young boys pose for us in the recital hall.It was dark in the hall and the boy's movements were rapid. I tried to keep a low iso and use my flash, but made a mess of it. Sometimes, though, luck happens and this is one of those occasions. It seems to me that the prayers are blazing their way to heaven or maybe it is Nirvana.Rows of boys saying a Hindu, Vedic, litany. They sat in the lotus position and nodded their heads to the right and to the left. They were disciplined and respectful. I wondered if they missed their mothers.The little boy on the near right never dropped his pose. He knew we were concentrating on him and he held still for us.The whole class of monks. Although they seem quite regimented here, they were full of fun and typical boys albeit a bit less rowdy than we are used to here in America.
