Backroads

USA, a large motor home tows an SUV around a curve on a California highway

An American Vacation

See the USA!

Driving on one of America’s “blue highways”. An expression made famous by William Least Heat Moon’s book of that same name.

Blue highways are back roads, roads that lead to places where the owners of restaurants cook the food themselves, where fruit stands advertise tree ripened fruit, where grandmas run the town’s visitor center and welcome you as if they had been waiting just for you to visit. (Note: they have been waiting…business is slow.) Places where strangers will invite you to dinner because your car has broken down in front of their house.  Blue highways are where America lives.

Blue Highways was a best seller in the early 80’s. Least Heat Moon wrote about the people of small town America with humor and respect. I recommend the book. You’ll learn about the country and you’ll get ideas for your next road trip.
