Chinguetti, Mauritania: portrait of a Mauritanian girl wrapped in a shawl

Girl from Chinguetti

Chinguetti, Mauritania 2005

We waited in the shade for our mechanic to find parts for one of the old Toyotas. The next week we would be alone in the Sahara. Chinguetti was a place to stock up on food, water, fuel and maybe a clutch or two.

Perhaps this girl worked in the motel, or maybe her mother did. She stood before me, not saying anything. She wanted something. Her picture taken?? She nodded. She’d seen us photographing other children and she didn’t want to be left out. No one likes to be left out.
