Family Compound in Ethiopian Highlands

Lalibela, Ethiopia 2013

The road to the ancient Coptic churches led for miles through the mountains surrounding Lalibela. Our van rattled and shook over the rough, stone strewn track. I had to cling to the side of the car to keep from sliding off my vinyl seat. Now and then we would spot some huts like these on the opposite side of the declivity. Most of the time, I didn’t ask to stop but this time I did. All you need is one shot. Remember?

Osman Ahmed can arrange a one-day or weekend tour in Lalibela. I would equate visiting these ancient churches to seeing the pyramids…but the churches are waaay more remote.
