Gypsy Girls

portrait of gypsy girls in romania

Gypsy Girls

We spied these two girls on a country road, their bright print skirts swirling about them as they strode to the village. They were happy to pose for us and the younger one allowed me to place her ribbon bedecked braids over her shoulder. She was proud of her long, thick hair. And who wouldn’t be? The girls were sweet and gentle and somewhat surprised, but pleased, when we gave them some lei for their cooperation.

Long, colorful skirts, bangles, bright scarves tied over their hair were trademarks of gypsy women. No matter their age, they exuded a confidence that bordered on feistiness. Very attractive. I couldn’t help watching them.

The country side was filled with smoke. The farmers were burning their lands in preparation for spring planting and village people were burning trash. The smoke from all the fires filled the air and desaturated the colors from the landscape. That gives the background of this photo a look of a faded backdrop like they used in studio portraits years ago.  I like it because has an old-fashioned feel and the colorfully dressed girls stand out almost like 3-D.
