Horizon LIne

Cambodian Floating Village

Cambodia 2011

Where to put the horizon line? The “law” that says it shouldn’t be mid-image has been emblazoned on my brain and if I’ve done that (and I still do occasionally) I’ll crop the least interesting part of the image. If the sky is boring, I’ll crop the sky. If the foreground doesn’t add interest, I’ll crop that. I don’t crop enough to get the horizon on either of the 1/3 lines because most of the time that looks like I’m trying to fake it. Which I am, of course.

Prime real estate for horizon lines is on the upper 1/3 or the lower 1/3. A diagonal horizon? No one talks about that. Horizons are supposed to be straight. But don’t you like this one? Just a little? I like it because the reflection leads to the dark blue color of the water giving the impression of depth and maybe danger. The houses are rather ramshackle and temporary looking so a diagonal suits them in my mind. They look like they could fall down in the next strong wind.

Live in Cambodia

Here’s the village all straightened up. I find it less interesting. What do you think?
