On the Banks of the Niger River

Pinnasse on the Niger at Mopti

Mopti, Mali 1997

The patch-work sail billows over a pinnasse loaded with firewood headed to the market of Mopti. The man in front watches for submerged mud banks that could ground his boat. In the rear another man holds the tiller. The straw huts of a Bozo village sit on the opposite bank veiled in the dust of the Sahara.

The huts of the Bozo village reminded me of Monet’s haystacks. I applied Snap Art 4 and now the huts look as if Monet might have painted them.

It’s hard for me to say which photo I like best. I always want detail. I want to be there. I   want to see and know everything. And yet, the brush strokes do add a sense of mystery. Luckily, Snap Art 4 only takes a few minutes to “paint” a photo.  Hmmm. Maybe I should bring back a bit of detail in the pinnasse using a mask. I’m not through with this photo yet!
