Portrait of a Busker

costumed street performer in Gujarat, India

The Performer

Gujarat, India 2009

Here’s a tip: always get out of the vehicle whenever or wherever it stops. You never know what you will see.

This man, in his outlandish costume, sauntered up the main road of the town. Whenever he had a crowd, he’d go into his routine which was to imitate someone riding an unruly horse. Only men and boys watched his performance and they seemed to appreciate it.  This type of entertainment is traditional but is dying out.

I’m guessing he made his own costume. Can’t you see him sewing scraps together late at night in a dimly lit room? Can’t you see him being pleased with the effect of his “horse and rider”…rather like a knight of old England? Can’t you imagine him dreaming of smiling crowds appreciating his performance?

Did anyone give him a tip? I don’t remember. I hope so. I hope I did.
