The Bridge at Mostar

The Bridge at Mostar

Mostar, Yugoslavia 1989

I’ve tried and tried to get this slide to look right and this is the best I’ve done. I loved the small village of Mostar with its many cafes overlooking the emerald-green river that flowed under its famous 500-year-old bridge.

Young men stood on the bridge (wearing a soviet version of a Speedo). They offered to dive off the bridge for money. It was a good way to make money in communist times.

The bridge was destroyed in 1994 in the war between the Croatians and the Bosnians but has now been restored. And I imagine there are still young men diving off for money. It’s what young men do or used to do.
