Towers of Ushguli

Caucasus Mountains, Georgia 2016

Ushguli is actually four small villages lying at the foot of Georgia’s highest mountain, Shkhara at 17037 feet. Each village is dotted with “defensive towers” which are places of safety during blood feuds.

By making the photo black and white, I tried to emphasize the sinister aspect of a culture that demands an eye for an eye. Only black and white, heavy on the black, could obliterate the beauty of the Caucasus Mountains.
