Vintage Libya

vintage photo of souk in Tripoli Libya

The Onlooker

Tripoli, Libya 1961

I met my husband when we were in the Air Force. He was in the Medical Corps and I was in the Nurse Corps. He was on his way to Tripoli, Libya and I was on my way to San Antonio, Texas. I remember he had to explain to me where Libya was. No one knew in those days. We had an Air Force base outside of Tripoli…that sounds like fiction now.

John was not an avid photographer and we only have a few souvenirs of those days. I love the ambiance of these photos with the men wearing their tight-fitting red skull caps. I love the young policeman looking on as the men bargain for goods.
