Russia 2009: The Canals of the North

A centuries old Orthodox church is slowly being destroyed by water. The village, which once surrounded and filled the church with worshipers, is long gone. Once Peter the Great gained control of the Gulf of Finland in the 17th century, Russia needed waterways to gain access to the ports. Canals were dug. Rivers dredged. And villages and churches were lost. It’s called progress.

We saw several churches that were flooded. We passed this one in the afternoon and luckily I was on deck. I think I got about 4 shots. You’d think I’d get more, but the ship sailed at a fast pace along here. This is my best shot because the water reflects the church and the curl of the ship’s wake is at its crest. Lonely. Forlorn. These words come to mind.
