Alepppo Souk

sandwich pushcart in Aleppo Souk

The Sandwich Boys

The news is horrible about Syria right now. Yesterday there was fighting in Aleppo. We were there a little more than a year ago and it was a beautiful city, especially the old souk which, thankfully, has not been tarted up as has Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar.

Here two young boys earn money for their family by running a sandwich cart. Although the men in the shop make some kind of snack food themselves, they were eager to have something from the boy’s cart. I ate a cheese sandwich myself. I’d just finished my lunch but I always want to taste everything. The sandwich was made with feta and grilled on an electric panini maker the boys had on their cart. It cost about ten cents and was delicious.
