An Echo of Irving Penn

Dasenetch girls perform grooming and beauty routine by village huts, Ethiopia

The Beauty Salon

Omo Valley, Ethiopia 2013

I spotted these girls out of the corner of my eye as we left the village. (I’m thinking this was the Dassenech village.) Quickly, I raised the camera to my eye and caught them in a perfect pose even if two girls have a rather unfriendly expression on their faces. That doesn’t bother me one bit. The pose is exquisite: a tangle of arms and legs and a triangle of faces and hands. In my mind it is an echo of Irving Penn…maybe you can’t hear the echo, but I can.

Fantastic! My favorite so far from the Omo Valley series.

      Hi, Torie.
I barely remember shooting this. I think it was the rather hostile expressions on the two girls that woke my consciousness to the fact that I had my camera focused on them. It’s a lucky shot in a way and in another way, it’s the result of many days of wandering with camera in hand, looking and trying to key in on the essence of a situation. Something you know all about. Thanks for your comment.
