Berber Fashion

a berber girl with distinctive hairstyle

Berber Girl

Morocco 2009

The tent was set in the mountains near Tamtatouche. As we drove past, a woman darted out and ran barefoot over the rocky ground to flag us down and invite us to the tent for tea. I said yes in spite of the dirt (water is hard to come by in an arid, rocky land) and the fact that the children looked as if they had a fever.

I’d never seen a hairstyle like this one. The top of her head is shaved but a braid woven with colored yarn makes the perfect fashion statement.   Maybe she had had lice or maybe her mother just got carried away when she was combing the girl’s hair. No matter. The girl is beautiful.

It is usually best to get down and shoot into a child’s face but here I wanted to show the hairstyle. Still we can see her haunting eyes.
