Berber Mountain Villages

Berber Village in the High Atlas

In the High Alas

Morocco

A village built on the side of a mountain above a wadi or dry river. It snows in winter here and these houses are freezing inside. You can see there are no chimneys. The Berbers here do build a fire in their home (unlike the desert Berbers who know that morning will bring a warm sun). There are holes in the roofs for the smoke to find its way out…eventually. At harvest time, grain, such as wheat, is dried on the flat roofs. Families sleep on the roofs when the weather is hot.
