Czechoslovakia: Farmerwomen

A sense of humor is a good thing

Here are my farmerwomen. I was going to show you a week or so ago, but wasn’t satisfied with the way I had photoshopped the slides.  These were shot in 1990. My oldest daughter, my husband and I were driving through eastern Europe. When we entered the old Czechoslovakia, we were entranced by the many castles and the charming villages. Marie and I stopped by this field to photograph the women. The older ones were happy to see us and to take a break from work. The younger woman was shy or just didn’t want her face to be photographed. She did not speak to us, but at the same time didn’t strike us as unfriendly. Maybe she just wanted to be in her good clothes to be photographed. The older women thought it was all a lark and we collected addresses to send photos after we returned home.

I tried to get the same colors that are in old postcards here and I think I suceeded. I love those colors, maybe because my parents had so many of those old postcards in our ‘memory’ box. I took some of them and I look at them now and then. Now we have HDR and the opposite, realistic colors…we can do anything, but I want those old colors, the ones that bring back time.
