Beehive Houses in Eastern Turkey
Turkish Beehive Houses

There aren’t many beehive houses left in Turkey. These are in the town of Harran, near the Syrian border. A friend who is married to a Syrian man, and who visited Syria on her honeymoon about 25 years ago, told me that beehive houses are really a Syrian tradition. There aren’t many left in Syria, I don’t think. We did visit one when I went to Syria last year, but if you want to see them, the best is to go to Harran, Turkey.

Each ‘beehive’ is a separate room. They are surprisingly roomy. Doors between each beehive make a many roomed house for this large family. The domed construction formed of bricks is cool during the hot weather. I don’t know if they are warm in winter.  The fringe that frames the houses is from a tent that was set up in the courtyard. It’s like our patio.
