Essaouira

Moroccan men dressed in djellabas gather at the beach in Essaouira

A Gathering of Friends

Essaouira, Morocco 2000

The man approaching wears typical Moroccan clothing. On his head is a strip of cloth called a chech, the long gown like garment is a djellaba and on his feet he wears the heelless slippers called babouche.  Many or maybe most Moroccans dress in traditional clothes, especially those in small towns and villages. When village men go to the city, such as Marrakesh or Fes, they will dress in western clothes and wear a baseball cap which they call a tarboosh. They don’t want to look like country bumpkins.

A view of Essaouira from the Portuguese bastions facing the fishing harbor. I gave this photo a retro look, darkening the sky and adding a “sloppy frame”.  It adds a sense of mystery. Software that makes the retro look easy is Exposure 5 from Alien Skin. Try a free download and see if you like it.
