Greek Village

Island of Santorini, Greece 1990 or thereabouts

I’m pretty sure this is the village of Oia, which is on the other side of the island from Santorini. I compared this with the images on Google, but I’m not sure because now there are several windmills in Oia. There weren’t any when we were there…not in the village proper. I remember looking for those windmills, they are the kind that Don Quixote tilted.

We stayed in the village of Santorini… just picked a hotel at the airport from among the crowd of hotel touts holding up signs as we deplaned. Our very damp room was in the basement and the walls were a deep sea-green. We felt as if we were staying in an aquarium.

Cruise ships docked directly below us and we could watch the Greek men heaving overweight tourists back onto their poor, suffering donkeys on the long climb up the cliff. As one man pushed a woman’s plump buttocks back into the saddle, it became obvious that there were some added perks to his job.

I had one of those Seagull cameras from Russia and I shot one old and genuine windmill, not a touristy substitute. I hadn’t taken a tripod and the Seagull needed a tripod, at least in my hands. I’ve got the poorly focused negatives to prove it!
