Gypsy Woman

Romania: portrait of a gypsy woman at her home

Romanian Gypsy Woman

The sun was out this morning and so were some of the gypsy families in the village Daniel and I visited. We began by photographing a boy playing with a soccer ball and soon familes began to open their gates to see just who the strangers were and what they were doing.

Daniel spoke to this family and got us invited into their courtyard. I was happy to see the red shawl and scarf hanging on the green gate. And despite the sun shining into their eyes, I wanted this color and it’s expression of gypsy-ness in my photos. I remembered being with a friend who had worked with Richard Avedon as a young woman and I sat the woman on the bench and spread her skirt around her. Thanks, Torie!

The gypsies were cooperative about posing but after they wanted money for cigarettes. I committed an error by handing the money to the wrong man…I should have given it to the ‘king’ but didn’t. The man I handed it to made a bee-line for the gate and that was the last we saw of him. Daniel thought this was hillarious but he conformed to protocol and made up for my mistake by giving the ‘king’ an equal amount.
