Impressions of Turkey

Istanbul and Galata Tower

Istanbul and Galata Tower

Istanbul, Turkey 2009

I stood on the Sultanahmet side of the Golden Horn to shoot this. It was late afternoon. Strolling Turks enjoyed the sharp breeze blowing from the water. Fish restaurants on rocking, floating barges sold a freshly grilled fish sandwich to long lines of locals. There is always a crowd by the water. People are embarking or disembarking the ferries. Home bakers sell pastries and other delicacies from the trunks of their cars. Families wander, vendors sell, fishermen fish. It’s lovely.

Inside a Turkish Teahouse

A teahouse in Eastern Turkey. It’s for men only, but tourists are ok.  I asked the waiter to pose for me. He was happy to sit there for a minute until his boss asked him what he thought he was doing. Although, I don’t speak Turkish, I could understand him…”She asked me to!” I liked the ambiance…so dark and mysterious…you must use your imagination and a hefty dose of Photoshop.

Two Turkish shoeshine boys of twenty years ago

Twenty Years Ago

It was one of my early morning photo hunts, a small seaside town. The boys were on their way to work. The boy on the right carried a homemade shoeshine box. The boy on the left has set down a pair of shoes that he was carrying. I let them shine my shoes and when I gave them the money, they kissed it and threw it against the wall of the nearby shop. The coins rolled back to them. It was the first money they had received that day and the gesture would bring them more money.
