Life on the Irrawaddy River

Burma: Boy wades in Irrawaddy River with old boat as background

Fat trunks of bamboo tied into rafts lined the bank of the Irrawaddy River near the Mingun Paya. The “Bamboo People” lived in makeshift cabins on the rafts, adding bamboo each day until the raft was large enough to be sailed downriver to market.

Young boys from the “Bamboo Families” played in the shallows near the river bank. As I’ve told you before, very few Burmese learn to swim even when they live on the water all of their lives.

The river bank was muddy and mucky. Trees grew low to the water, their gnarled trunks creating a perfect place for snakes to make their home…You would not catch me bathing in the Irrawaddy!
