Mandalay: Marble Artisan

On Marble Street

Mandalay, Burma 2010

Using his feet as a vise, an artisan puts the finishing touches on a marble Buddha.

Dust clouds billowing from sanded marble filled the air. The white powder covered everyone who worked there. Each breath they drew and each breath we drew, contained minute particles of stone. Within moments, the dust had caused my friend’s camera to seize up. I didn’t want to linger despite the photo opportunities.
