Men of Metsovo

Greece 1993

When the group leader announced that we would only have one day in Metsovo instead of the two days that were on the itinerary, I was furious. Metsovo was my highlight!

Metsovo is a small village in the mountains of Greece and I was hoping to photograph traditional life unchanged. I can still remember the one old man who wore the old Greek costume of tasseled hat, red and black shoes with a pom-pom on the toe, and white wool hose. (similar to Greek Army dress uniforms) He had a craggy and rather forbidding aspect and I was reluctant to ask for a photo. I shot these grandfathers holding their canes instead. They were gracious and lovable. Maybe the costumed man was as well. Why didn’t I try???
