Morocco: Women in Chador

black and white street scene showing women in chador

Women in Chador

Rissani, Morocco late 1990’s

Two Arabized Berber women clutch their haik as their custom decrees. Berber women are not so conservative, especially the older women who are no longer considered worth a male glance.

Arabized Berbers are Berber tribes who have adopted the customs of Arabs. They speak a form of Arabic while the Berbers speak Tachelheit, one of the Berber languages.

I have a similar shot posted. I love these photos. The shape of the women, the shape of the Moroccan arch and the clutter on the street. It is perfect for black and white.
