On the Ferry

Young girl sells bananas on the ferry to Gambia

African Girl

1998: A young girl on the ferry…somewhere in West Africa…I think we were headed to Senegal.

Her expression was serious, more suited to an adult than a girl of 10 or 12 years old.  She was determined to sell her bananas. Silently, she held her basket out to passengers who seemed likely to buy. She threaded her way, barefooted, on the hot metal deck.  Another day, another dollar.
