digital painting: cube shaped houses in Ouarzazate

Ouarzazate, Morocco

Morocco 2009

The morning sun strikes the cube shaped homes of Ouarzazate. Most are built with cement blocks. Those who have the money build these large homes. It’s a statement that they have arrived, or that their children who have left for Europe are sending money to their parents the way good children should.

I’ve been told that the old people don’t like living in these homes. In winter they are cold and in summer they are hot. They often return to the ‘bled’ or countryside to live in their adobe homes which are warm in winter and cool in summer. They use these new homes only when they have a ‘fest’ or party.
