The Grand Colonade at Palmyra

Palmyra, Syria 2010

A group of tourists learns about the ancient city of Palmyra, which prospered under Roman rule as an important silk road trading center. A temple to the god, Baal, is one of the main sites, as is the colonade shown above which leads to the principal east-west street of the city. There are also several Christian churches among the ruins.

The Kibbe Shop

A man chops meat for kibbe, the national dish of Syria, with a huge knife. We were exploring the streets of Deir-E-Zor and glanced in his shop. He gestured to us to come in and was pleased to have his photo taken.

I enjoyed the Syrian cuisine. When I got home, I bought a Syrian cookbook and also found some good recipes on the net, but nothing I cooked could compare with what we ate when we were there.

A good place for Syrian recipes is: http://www.syriancooking.com/
