Paradise

Woman Bathing in the Irrawaddy

Moment of Reflection

A woman gazes into the distance after bathing in Burma’s Irrawaddy river.

This photo would look idyllic if it weren’t for the buckets of freshly washed clothing. Even in what looks like paradise, it seems we must carry on with our chores. How refreshing to immerse yourself in the river after scrubbing laundry for an hour or so.

It was hot that day, almost unbearably hot. I was glad to be under the shade. I didn’t want to bathe in the Irrawaddy, though. It was muddy. How did they get their clothing clean in the muddy water? Somehow they succeeded.
