Peasant Life

Cozy thatched roofed homes of Romanian peasants

Peasant Castles

Romania 2012

These are Romanian homes set in a village museum. The low, heavily thatched roofs were designed for harsh winters by the peasants who had to endure them. The beautiful, soft slopes of thick, sweet-smelling hay must have protected the families from the cold, mustn’t they? And yet if you read about the lives of these people, they were constantly cold and hungry.  The peasants had one meal per day. A meal of mamaliga which is a type of polenta. They looked forward to celebrations such as a wedding or even a funeral when they might be able to fill their stomachs.
