Pelicans on Lake Hawasa

Lake Awasa, Ethiopia: pelicans with their beaks wide open trying to catch bits of fish thrown by fishermen

Pelicans Catching Fish

Lake Hawasa, Ethiopia

The shore of the lake was crowded with small boats that had returned from the morning’s fishing. Teenaged men untangled fish from nets while others swiftly filleted the morning’s catch. Enterprising boys gathered the scraps and threw them to the birds for tourist photographers. The pelicans pushed each other aside to get the tidbits, but if a Marabou stork approached the pelicans had no chance.

Fish “restaurants” served patrons who sat under shade trees eating platters of freshly fried fish. That looked good! I got the idea that this lakeside spot was a destination for city folk who wanted to spend the day enjoying the scenery and a good meal.
