Riddle of the Sphinx

Mali: Timbuktu 1998

Remember the riddle of the sphinx? What animal walks on four legs in the morning, two legs in the afternoon and three legs in the evening? Answer: Man, who as a baby crawls, as an adult walks upright and when old needs a cane.

I shot this as I was walking with my tour companions through Timbuktu. It was evening. I was shooting film. I had no time to make any adjustments to my settings, I just pressed the shutter. The photo is underexposed but not so much that I couldn’t get a good print in the darkroom. Getting a good digital file turned out to be almost as difficult.
