Rissani Market Day

dramatic black and white photo of Moroccan women wearing chador

Women of Rissani

Rissani, Morocco 1998

Women wearing black chador fill the streets on market day in Rissani. They clutch the fabric over their face, revealing just one eye as they trail their men down the street. The men do the haggling, but the women go with them to decide which item to buy.

I have always loved this photo. Low key is my favorite and the way the shafts of light outline the women is lovely to me: it changes a mundane scene into mysterious. Best of all, it was easy to print in the darkroom.  I was happy when that happened!
