Silhouette in Fog

a young Chinese farmer in the fog covered mountains of Yunnan leads his donkey to the fields

Farmer in Fog

Yunnan Province, China 2005

We seldom saw a house among the fields of corn and canola. Most of the farmers lived in the village. Here a man leads his donkey and her foal home after a hard day’s work. The farmers seldom acknowledged us, no friendly waves, no cadging of cigarettes.

Fall is supposed to be the best season in Yunnan, but we had rain nearly every day and the fog rose up out of the valleys as if it were smoke from a forest fire. We were on the cliff trying to get some shots of the patchwork of fields when this man came along. I’d already adjusted my camera by checking my LCD screen and so I just swung the lens toward him and got a couple of shots.

He was close enough so that he has detail in this shot. If he were further away, I’d have had more of a silhouette. I like this one. You can see he is young and handsome.
