Transylvania landscape with trees

Transylvania

Romania 2012

I had bought some apples from a farmer woman. They were the past fall’s harvest. It was now April. I’d read about pioneers having root cellars and now I’d have my chance to see how good fruit could taste that had lain ‘buried” and covered with straw for six months. They were soft but still delicious. They’d have made a great apple pie or strudel.

Daniel got out his tripod and, so did I. We didn’t want to pass up a photo opportunity even as we ate our snack. I shot down the hill at a row of poplars bordering a pasture fence with a river beyond. Spring had not arrived. The smoke from burning fields further dulled the muted colors of the landscape. I used high contrast to bring out the bare branches of the trees and the contours of the river bank.

gate and tower: Humor Church Romania

Gate and Tower

The wooden gate and tower of Humor Church in Bukovina. These decorative yet useful gates are the essence of Romania’s countryside.  This is another photo that my eye slid past when I looked through my shots from my trip. Sometimes my subconscious does the work for me as it did here. I wanted a photo of a gate because they are becoming rare. Thirty years ago even a simple cottage had a gate that testified to a woodworking artisan.
