Syria: Before the Troubles

Deir-E-Zor…Before the Troubles

Syria 2010

The town of Deir-E-Zor has been in the news the past two years. What was a quiet little town on the day we visited has been bombed to smithereens. The afternoon we walked about, the town was empty. Nearly all had gone to the mosque for Friday prayers…well they had closed their shops. I didn’t know where they were to be honest. There were some boys fishing from the bridge that crossed the Euphrates. Built in 1927 by the French, it was one of the few sights to see.  Small restaurants on the riverbank sold  falafel sandwiches made of delicious falafel, hummus and French-fries wrapped in pita. Next time I’ll get mine without the fries.

The people we met seemed friendly. I got a bear hug from a man selling apples. I shouldn’t have shot so many photos of him. He got the wrong idea. Yikes!
