Afternoon in Rangoon

Teahouse in Old Rangoon

Rangoon, Burma 2011

I like this type of shot. It shows an “iconic” place: the teahouse. If you have ever read about life in Burma, you will be familiar with the teahouse and its importance in Burmese life. I wanted to spend time in a teahouse on my visit to Burma, but didn’t get the opportunity. When you are on a photo tour, you do nothing but photograph. Shopping is left to the final day as is relaxing in a teahouse.

This was a much wider shot than you see here. At the time, I didn’t see my focal point. I’m far from perfect. Yesterday I decided to see what could be done to this shot.  I looked carefully for the most “Norman Rockwell” type of character and cropped to advantage.

I love the man who is exhaling the smoke of his cheroot and the Muslim man with his white beard. There are many Indians who are Muslim in Rangoon. This teahouse was near the Indian market.
