I do recommend reading that article, but if you haven’t the time, just look at these photos. They are common scenes. Hard working, but poor Chinese making their living the best they can.

The Day’s Profits

These were shot on a village market day in Yunnan Province. The cobbler sets up his shoe shop on the curbside. The farmer sells his chickens, which he has brought to market in that basket, by the side of the road as well.

You can see a steam rising from a huge wok behind the cobbler. That is a restaurant kitchen.

These are called environmental portraits.  The surroundings tell something about the person. Often the environmental portrait calls for a wide-angle lens…or if you don’t have one, stand far from your subject.
