Burkina Faso Guerunsi village with women painting designs on houses

The Experts

Burkina Faso 2001  Guerounsi tribeswomen give their opinion on home decor.

We spent the night in this village. There weren’t many of us tourists…maybe 8 or so.  Alberto Nicheli, of TransAfrica, was our leader. Because he knew the headman of the tribe, we were allowed to stay in the village. The women of the village were noted for their beautiful, creative designs covering the exterior of their homes.

Above you see the women who were proud to show us their skills. Not only did they paint designs, but they mixed the mud to prepare the surface, mixed the clay to the right color and then applied the design. There was a lot of discussion as each woman gave her opinion on just how she liked it done.
