Master and Servant

Lalibela, Ethiopia 2013

A servant holds an umbrella over his master’s head. At this altitude, (8600 feet) the sun is a hammer pounding into your skull. I remembered my Italian mother’s warning, learned from her mother “…be careful, the sun will cook your brains!” and I made sure to keep my rather ineffectual cap on my head. The older man was all set to enjoy the market, to see and be seen, to greet old friends and make new ones. He carries a fly swish made of a horse’s tail. They both wear a shawl called a shamma .  Ethiopians wear the shamma everywhere but especially to church.
