The Miller’s Mother

Working Hands

Kalnoky, Romania 2012  The miller’s mother weaves by window light.

My guide, Daniel Gheorghita (FelixRomania on Google+), and I felt privileged to be invited into the miller’s cottage. The main room served as kitchen, dining room, living room and weaving studio. The only light in the room came from the vine-covered window next to the loom. It was harsh and contrasty and the woman went about her work with a vengeance. She was one of those energetic farm women who never lets a minute go by without doing something productive. I got this shot and then began to use my flash, trying to find the right settings, but she had had enough. She had other chores to do and the photo session was over.
