In a Turkish Barbershop

Eastern Turkey: A man sitting in a barberchair smokes a cigarette with aplomb

Aplomb

Eastern Turkey 2009

I often go into a barbershop when I am wandering around a foreign city or village. Part is the mystery of entering a man’s domain. My camera gives me license to poke into places women do not usually visit. I’m always welcomed, or maybe my camera is always welcomed.

I gave this photo a ‘film noir’ look. I think it heightens the expression on the men’s faces: the honest, open stare of the younger man and the nonchalant, rather smug expression of the man in the chair.

The man in the chair is holding a cigarette. I should have burned that in to make it more noticeable. That’s the trouble with high contrast: the highs and lows of the gray scale can get lost. But drama? You’ve got it in spades.
