Two Stallions

Two young stallions at play

Camargue Stallions

France 2018

The stallions were young and although the idea was that we would photograph them “fighting”, they were playing. Now and then, though, the stallion on the left would kick with both feet and we could hear the impact and almost feel the blow. The other stallion showed no sign of being injured, though, and continued “rassling” as we would say in South Carolina.

The light that fell on the horses was bright and even. No contrast. I tried many ways to give the photo some interest and finally decided to turn “day into night” by obscuring the photo completely with a dark gradient and then using a mask to bring back just the horses and a bit of the background. You can learn how to do this if you watch a Topaz tutorial by Bobbie Goodrich on You Tube.
