Unfazed

Elderly peasant Chinese couple in doorway of their home

Seen It All

China, Yunnan Province 2005

An elderly peasant couple in the doorway of their home. We had spotted the man smoking his long clay pipe and, of course, swarmed to him  with cameras ablaze.  He had endured nearly a century of upheavals in his lifetime and a group of western tourists was nothing to get excited about.  Despite their, no doubt, hard life, their expression shows contentment and inner peace. We should take a lesson.

They were both clad in blue Mao jackets. I don’t like a blue and white look to my pics. Ok, I’m a one-plan-pony, but I like this aged, yellow look better. It reminds me of the ancestor paintings of Chinese aristocracy. And the border showing the slide frame adds to the vintage look. I love vintage. You know that by now.

The woman wears a shower cap thing on her head. She can get away with it because she had made it look like a beret. And it was raining that day. Look at her hands as they hold her cane. Aren’t they beautiful? Oh, why didn’t I see that at the time??? Why didn’t I get a close up of her hands?  With my new 32 megapixel camera, I will be able to crop into any photo and get enough pixels to make a good photo. (see my butterfly photo here: http://www.rosemarysheel.com/archives/backyard-photography  It will be so much easier for me in the future. I won’t have to berate myself for being less than perfect. Maybe I’ll wind up with a beatific expression myself.
