Ushguli, Village in the Caucasus Mountains

Village of Ushguli

Georgia 2016

Ushguli, the highest village in Europe (at nearly 7000 ft.) is located near the snow-covered mountain of Shikara. A unique feature of Caucasus culture is the “defense towers”. Almost every family has a stone tower similar to the one in the fairy tale of Rapunzel. I’d read that their purpose was for protection of family members who were involved in a blood feud. Some call them “vengeance towers”. I’ll show you those later.
