Parasols in Progress

Thailand 2007

The handicraft shops weren’t the least bit exotic. A cavernous building filled with studios where the locals made umbrellas, wove, etc. I pretended to be interested for the sake of my guide. How would you like to take someone around who cast aspersions on what your village had to offer? You wouldn’t.

I’m glad I persevered. I’ve got this photo. It suggests vertigo, doesn’t it? I increased the contrast until everything disappeared except the parasol spines and the harsh white of the sun. It took me years to notice this photo but what counts is that I did notice it.
