Gerounsi women artists prepare to paint a village wall

The Experts

Burkina Faso 2003

We stayed the night in a Gerounsi village. Our tents were placed on the flat roofs of the adobe houses. In the morning, the women gave us a demonstration of their artistic skills by painting a village wall.

Thinking back on it, I don’t remember seeing much of the village men. Perhaps they thought entertaining ‘toubabs’ or white people was beneath them. The women were pleased to be the center of attention. I got the feeling that to be the center of attention is rare for them.
