Libya As It Was

Examining the Merchandise

Libya 1962

An Arab man shops for a dress in the Tripoli souk. He has thrown his toga over his head…no doubt from the effort of trying to please a woman who waits at home. The man peering into the doorway might be someone with time to spare and he watches the back and forth of haggling. Arabs love to  haggle and take pride in their skills at getting a good price. Once I bought a dress in Istanbul’s souk and the bystanders cheered when I bested the salesman. Sad to say that was my one and only time to best an Arab salesman.

My husband visited an oasis called Ghadames and was impressed by the collection of copper vessels hanging on the (he thought it was a kitchen) wall. I love this look.

Abdu, if you can add to this, please do.
