In a Burmese Tea House

Woman in Tea House

Burma 2011

We stopped at a tea house for lunch. A few women were sitting out the rainstorm. As we waited for our food…I ordered noodles…I photographed the women. I ask by pointing to my camera. The women probably didn’t want me to take their photo, but they agreed.

The other women were young and had curled and styled their hair in a western fashion. I liked this older woman with her severe hairstyle, her tiny earrings and traditional blouse and skirt. Her work-worn hand rests on the table and tells her life story.

A successful photographer once told me that photos of old women don’t sell. No one is interested. Well, I am.  The faces of old people have character unlike smooth young faces.  This handsome woman’s face radiates inner tranquility: she has fought the good fight, she has done her share.
